ROOMS

ROOMS
Built in 2000 as a private villa, Kahanda Kanda sits on top of a ridge, surrounded by a 12-acre tea estate. Upon arrival, a member of staff will greet you with a refreshing fruit drink and chilled hand towel, and the KK experience truly begins.
Walking along beside the saffron wall, you will see that the main area of the villa consists of three detached rooms running adjacent to the wall - first is The Peacock Suite and then the Living Pavilion. On each side of the huge airy Living Pavilion are Lily Ponds, over which you step to reach the Dining Pavilion.
Beyond the Dining Pavilion is the infinity edged pool, 20 metres in length and looking cool and inviting, with its dark green polished cement sides. Beside the pool is a recessed area, shaded by white bougainvillea, where breakfast or dinner may be taken. Glimpsed beyond the Saffron Wall are Tamarind Suite and Mango Suite, whilst Tea and Garden Suites lay beyond the pool, surrounded by lush tropical greenery. Hellaconia and Dubu are sited beyond the vegetable garden.
Although close to Galle, the atmosphere is utter peace and tranquility - a truly unique hotel among boutique hotels. To further enhance this aura of calm, we have neither televisions nor DVD players in the bedrooms (except for Dubu) - there is, however, a plasma screen in the exercise room, with satellite and a library of DVDs. There are telephones in the bedrooms (for internal use only), as well as Ipod docks – though we want you to escape from the technology that runs most people’s lives!

FOOD & AMENITIES

Dining

They use only fruits, vegetables and herbs grown on the estate, supplemented with a selection of the freshest local produce to create simple, fusion dishes and classic Sri Lankan curries to pamper our guests' palates with good health. Two of the three resident chefs have trained in Thailand, and offer a mouth-watering range of Thai dishes.
As important as the food itself, mealtimes are entirely at your discretion. At breakfast we offer a selection of local specialities as well as Western dishes. Lunch can be three courses, or you can choose from our Snack Menu. Dinner is a gourmet affair and if you would like a romantic dinner, may I suggest we set up a table in the garden for supper under the stars? For those who are hell-bent on losing weight, we offer a calorie-counted series of menus, but we do not enforce this on everyone! We are pleased to offer Cookery Classes for our guests wishing to learn the secrets of Sri Lankan or Thai cuisine. The Dining Pavilion is open to non-residents – we just ask that you call to make a reservation.

ACTIVITIES NEARBY

GALLE
Kahanda Kanda is ideally situated from which to visit Galle, and especially the historic Galle Fort, as well as many other places to visit and other activities.
The Fort was established by the Portuguese in the C15th, and was completed by the Dutch 100 years later. The British came in the C18th, and in 1988 it was designated a World Heritage Site.
The narrow streets of the Fort are lined with Dutch merchant villas, with pillared verandahs, carved doors and windows. Offices dating back to the Dutch and British periods are still in use today.
Strolling along the streets or along the ramparts, offers the visitor a unique insight into a patchwork of bustling life - Buddhists, Tamils, Muslims and Europeans all living in harmony - commerce such as lace-makers and jewelers alongside tourists, and the ever present cricket match!
One of the great joys of the Fort is to visit the Ramparts around sunset, a popular activity for local and tourist alike! Galle town is best explored on foot, or by tuk tuk. It is a sprawling metropolis, with the exotic fruit market to the myriad of shops in Main Street, selling everything from saris to televisions!
